Eagles sports teams return to the playing fields

Barrington High School sports teams opened the fall season on Monday morning, Aug. 23.

Members of the football, field hockey, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, girls tennis, girls volleyball and cheerleading were scheduled to hold practices — some teams got started early in the morning while other teams met later in the day. 

Falls sports games begin on Saturday, Aug. 28. Following is a list of each fall sports team’s first game or scrimmage of the season:

• Field hockey: Barrington at North Kingstown, Saturday, Aug. 28, at 8 a.m.

• Girls soccer: Pilgrim at Barrington (scrimmage), Monday, Aug. 30, at 3:30 p.m.

• Boys soccer: Barrington at Central Falls (scrimmage), Monday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m.

• Girls volleyball: Barrington at Dighton-Rehoboth, Tuesday, Aug., 31, at 5:30 p.m.

• Girls tennis: Barrington at Mt. Hope, Thursday, Sept 2, at 3 p.m.

• Boys and girls cross country: Barrington at Deerfield Park, Saturday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m.

• Football: Barrington at East Providence, Friday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
