Police chase suspect through Barrington and into Warren

Police say suspect, still missing, is an Aquidneck Island man

A high-speed car chase plowed through parts of Barrington on Tuesday, April 1.

The chase barreled along County Road at about 12:20 p.m., paused briefly near the intersection with Maple Avenue where the suspect’s pickup truck smashed into another car driven by an elderly Barrington woman, and ended unresolved in Warren where the driver abandoned his vehicle and disappeared into the neighborhood near Miller Street.

According to Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia, the police pursuit started in Swansea, Mass., following an alleged larceny. Massachusetts State Police chased the suspect’s vehicle on Route 195, but later broke off the pursuit. Seekonk Police then picked up the chase, but later radioed ahead to Barrington when the suspect’s vehicle, a white 2007 Chevy pickup truck, entered Barrington on the Wampanoag Trail.

That is where an alert Barrington Police officer spotted the vehicle stuck in traffic just north of the intersection with Federal Road. The officer pulled up behind the wanted pickup truck and turned on the cruiser’s flashing lights.

That move yielded an instant response — the suspect vehicle pulled out of traffic and sped south down County Road toward the center of town.

A moment later, as the pickup truck passed by Barrington Town Hall, a 71-year-old Barrington woman driving a newer model Audi pulled out of Maple Avenue and turned south onto County Road, directly into the path of the truck. The pickup slammed the Audi, but showed no signs of slowing.

The suspect continued south on County Road, past the entrance to the Barrington Shopping Center, over the two bridges, and into Warren.

Police said the suspect dumped the pickup truck on Miller Street in Warren and fled on foot. Police searched the area for the suspect, but could not find him.

Chief Correia said police believe the suspect is an Aquidneck Island resident. Police are still investigating.

Chief Correia said the driver faces a series of charges, including reckless driving, eluding police, and leaving the scene of an accident.
