Barrington police are warning residents about a widespread phone scam.
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, police received a phone call from a Barrington resident who was concerned about a call she received. The resident told police someone identifying himself as a law enforcement official called her and said her granddaughter had been arrested after she hit a politician with her car. The caller said the Barrington resident needed to withdraw $9,000 in cash for bail money.
The caller also told the resident not to tell anyone about the call, but the resident thought better and contacted police.
Barrington police officers said the call is part of an elaborate scam that has bilked dozens of residents out of their money. Police said the scam is targeting people all across the region.
Police said Barrington residents can always call the local station at (401) 437-3930 and speak to an officer if they are concerned about a call they received at home and believe it may be a scam.
