The Barrington Minors Division All-Star softball team defeated Middletown 38-0 in a District II tournament opener on Tuesday night in Barrington.

In the top of the first inning, Middletown's pitcher plowed through the Barrington lineup, striking out the first three batters. In the bottom of the first inning, Middletown threatened to score, but Layla Kupperman fired the ball to catcher Angie Promades to throw out a Middletown runner at the plate. Barrington pitcher Lucy LoVerme also struck out a pair of Middletown batters.

Barrington exploded for 18 runs in the top of the second inning. Barrington capitalized on walks, hit batters, and some timely hitting. Middletown eventually switched pitchers in the third inning, and Barrington bats responded with more than a dozen hits.

Barrington advanced to a winner's bracket game against Portsmouth, which defeated Tiverton 17-3 on Tuesday night. The game will be played on Wednesday, June 6, at Barrington High School's varsity softball field at 5:45 p.m.
