Oyster & Chowder Festival on the Newport waterfront

Posted

Sip, slurp, and savor the best of Rhode Island’s coastal cuisine at the annual Newport Oyster & Chowder Festival, held on the historic waterfront at Bowen’s Wharf. Spend the weekend sampling freshly-shucked oysters and award-winning chowders from a curated lineup of Rhode Island’s top oyster farms and favorite restaurants.

With more than 75 oyster farms across the state, each shellfish offers a unique flavor profile shaped by its own corner of the coast. Taste your way around the Ocean State and try a variety of local oysters, all in one festive, open-air setting — a true showcase of Rhode Island aquaculture.

Enjoy live music, signature cocktails and a lively atmosphere under the signature striped tents. The event is open to the public, with all food and drink available for purchase directly from vendors and multiple full-service bars.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
