Barrington Town Manager Jim Cunha said the town council and committee on appropriations approved the proposed raises. Mr. Cunha also offered explanations for some of the increases:
• Business and Finance Director: "For superior performance, but most importantly for retention and to close the gap with the current job market (East Greenwich and South Kingstown just hired finance directors for $145,000).
• DPW Director: "For superior performance and to close the gap with the job market."
• Director of Planning, Building & Resilience: "For accretion of duties as we combined departments (reducing the work force) and added new supervisory responsibilities.
• Recreation & Senior Services Director: "Due to lag behind contemporaries."
• Community Services Librarian: "Due to change in and increased responsibilities. Change reduced requirement by one employee."
• Library Technology Director: "New hire with additional responsibilities."
• Town Manager Administrative Assistant: "Superior performance and to match contemporaries."
• Tax Clerk Supervisor: "Due to combination of clerical staff for finance and tax assessor, the senior clerk took on the supervisor role (accretion of duties) and saved one employee."
• Inspections Administrative Assistant. "New hire at lower rate that was scheduled for a raise, superior performance and accretion of duties."
