Huskies improve to 12-1, Eagles fall to 3-8

The Mt. Hope softball team pounded Barrington 23-3 in five innings during a Division II away game on a cold and blustery Monday afternoon. The Huskies improve their overall record to 12-1, the team’s only loss coming at the hands of Connecticut’s top ranked Fairfield Ludlow on April 30. Barrington has now lost three in a row and dropped their record to 3-8.

“We are plying well right now,” said Mt. Hope head coach Craig Giarusso. “We still have six tough games to play and aren’t looking at the playoffs yet. We are looking at one game at a time and know that we have to play our best in every game.”

The Huskies certainly had the eye of the tiger as they slugged 18 hits off two Barrington pitchers and drove in 20 runs. Mt. Hope scored 11 runs off freshman pitcher Ace McCoy who walked just three batters in the first inning.  They scored nine more runs off Eagles pitcher Grace Senechal in the second inning. The senior had trouble finding the plate and Barrington coach Sandy Gorham replaced her with McCoy who pitched the rest of the game. Mt. Hope scored 3 more in the fifth inning before the game was called due to the ten-run rule. Three hitter Jayda Sylvia and clean up hitter Grace Stephenson led the Huskies attack with four hits a piece. Sylvia scored three runs and drove in six, Stephenson scored three runs and drove in two. Elsa White, Logan Levesque, and Julia Allen each had two hits, Sydney Crowell, Reily Amaral, Alice Grantham and Sammy Malafronte each had a hit. The Huskies have scored double digits in eight of their eleven games this season and three of their last four.

Meanwhile Mt. Hope junior pitcher Reily Amaral struck out 12 Eagles, sprinkled seven hits and gave up just three runs in five innings of work. The Huskies played well defensively behind Amaral. Right fielder Logan Levesque ran in to snag a shallow fly ball making a beauty of a catch to save a run in the second inning. Barrington first baseman Isys Dunphy smacked a double to left field to score McCoy and Morgan Martin to cut the lead to 20-2. The Eagles scored one more run in the top of the fourth before Amaral struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
