Move out day is Monday for old middle school

Demolition of old school scheduled for mid-July

The boxes are packed. The movers are scheduled. The final day for the old Barrington Middle School building is near.

Friday is the last day of classes in Barrington, and it will also be the last time students will walk the halls of Barrington Middle School.

The old building will be demolished and its rubble trucked away starting in mid-July, and the new middle school, which is located closer to the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Middle Highway, will greet students in September for the start of the 2019-20 school year.

Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore said Monday, June 24 is the move-out day for teachers. The district is asking volunteers to help middle school teachers pack up their classroom items on June 24. Once that is completed, a moving company will begin the process of bringing boxes and other items from the old school to the new one. The company will complete the move in four days, said Mr. Messore.

Brait Builders, the contractor who built the new middle school, will take over ownership of the old school after July 1, said Mr. Messore. The superintendent said crews will complete an asbestos abatement process with the old building and then salvage metal from the structure prior to the start of demolition.

Once the old middle school is razed and the rubble removed, crews will begin grading the property where the new athletic fields will be located. Mr. Messore anticipated that the grading would be underway in September.

The superintendent said it appears that the building committee is "leaning toward" seeding the new fields as opposed to using sod.

'Energized'

The construction of the new middle school in Barrington may have been overshadowed by the district's upcoming start time changes, but Mr. Messore is hoping residents will get more excited about the new school now.

"If I were a teacher, I'd be energized about coming back to a brand new building," said Mr. Messore.

The new school, said the superintendent, will support a better learning environment for students. Mr. Messore said he knows that many students, teachers, and parents are excited about the new middle school.

The superintendent said officials are also currently working on planning opportunities for people to visit the new school and see what's in store for students and teachers. The district is planning one or more open houses for the new school.

"People who are close to this project are very excited about it," he said.

Mr. Messore said the contractor is still under budget on the new middle school project.
