Letters: Stars and Stripes should fly alone

To the editor:

Though I wish no notoriety, I must register my immediate and profound distress over the flying of any other flag on the same pole as our beloved and respected Old Glory. Regardless of what the other flag represents, it does not belong there. I totally agree with the sentiments of the United Veterans’ Council.

It has been a practice for many years to allow the POW flag to fly under the American flag, honoring those who have literally given of themselves to defend that very flag; that we may never forget their sacrifice. If that cause has now been compromised by the BLM flag, then so be it, let no flag share the same pole as the Stars and Stripes.

If the town council and the town manager take it upon themselves to honor an organization of which many members have stated disgusting slogans against the police; one whose members have participated in rioting, looting, and setting fires...then put up a separate flag pole to do that. That pole can be used for ‘all the causes’, subsequently cluttering up our beautiful town hall grounds. It is my opinion that politics and controversy do not belong there.

The overwhelming majority of people in this country...and our town, care about ALL people and want to live in peace with each other. We support equality of all races and creeds. That will be accomplished with education and respect and opportunities being made available for everyone, not by force, ugliness and suppression of patriotism by radical groups on either side. I support and respect peaceful protest.

My husband and I have lived in Barrington for fifty-one years and find this issue quite disturbing. Please, to those who are making the new rules, give this more thought and do not allow another flag to fly on the pole meant for the American Flag. Maybe the Veterans can fly a POW flag separately in their Memorial if it can’t be on the same pole.

Respectfully,

Elizabeth T. Greene
