Letter: We condemn the words of Donald Trump

Posted

To the editor:

As American citizens, as people of faith, and as human beings, we decry Donald Trump’s recent racist invective against four women of color - all American citizens, all elected to Congress to represent millions of other citizens.

Donald Trump has a long history of racist speech and actions, starting as early as the 1970s when he refused to rent apartments to African Americans which prompted President Nixon’s Department of Justice to sue him; to calling Mexicans rapists; to disparaging a federal judge because of his heritage; to stating that white supremacist racists in Charlottesville were “fine people.” Now he’s told four citizens, three of whom were born in this country, to “go back” to the countries they came from. His words are despicable and contrary to the ideals of our country. Mr. Trump not only is a racist himself; he encourages racism in other Americans, thereby endangering the lives of all people of color.

Good and reasonable people can disagree about policies and about how to deal with migrants, immigration, our borders and our national security. However, good people must agree that racism is evil, and they cannot remain silent in the face of it.

We condemn the words of Donald Trump, and we call on all patriotic citizens to publicly do likewise.
