Letter: Thank you, Barrington — you showed up for me

To the editor:

I’ve lived in Barrington for 28 years and until now have never had reason to reach out to my community for help. I lost my little dog, Tilly Pearl recently and am astounded by the overwhelming support of my neighbors and just about everyone in town and beyond.

To my neighbors in Sherwood Plat; you walked, biked and drove through the neighborhood for days looking for Tilly Pearl. You came to my house and picked up flyers, posted them throughout the neighborhood. You checked in on me to make sure I was okay, and to see if there was any news about my missing pup.

To Officer Murphy of the Barrington Police Department; you showed up with great compassion, looked respectfully around my property and assured me that you and animal control would do all you could to help find her. You even followed up with a phone call and your colleagues at the police department posted one of my flyers.

To Barrington Town Hall, the Senior Center, Public Library and Department of Public Works;  you all demonstrated great care, posting flyers, and giving me comfort in knowing that you shared my concern.

To the Barrington YMCA; not only did you post flyers for me, but when one of your young campers approached me with an offer to help me find my dog. . .well I almost broke. . .nothing is more powerful than the innocent kindness of a child. I saw a tear in your eye too.

To Barrington Town Farm; thank you for posting Tilly Pearl’s flyer. You made sure to frame it in neon orange so it wouldn’t be overlooked.

To Bruce’s Pet Grooming; thank you for coming to my home, posting flyers and reaching out to me for days to check on the status of my missing Tilly Pearl.

While I never did find her, I am strengthened by your support. Despite your busy lives and demanding jobs, you all paused for a moment to help one of your neighbors. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for confirming my belief in community.

You all shine bright, and I will never forget it.

With deep appreciation,

Sally Turner
