To the editor:
The Barrington Republican Town Committee condemns the violence that erupted in our nation’s capital Wednesday. As stated in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal editorial: “Fueled by lies about a stolen election, protesters overran police and stormed America’s seat of government…forcing a lockdown of the U.S. Capitol… What a disgrace… Mr. Trump’s refusal to accept his loss, and the false hope he gives to his supporters, is validating the worst things his critics have said about him.”
Former Attorney General William Barr said today that President Trump committed a “betrayal of his office and supporters.” “Orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable,” Barr said.
This sums up well what many people are feeling. Our devotion must be to the Constitution and our system of self-government. Democracy is fragile, and this past election has challenged the faith of many people in fair elections. It is essential that our state governments assure the country’s voters that our elections are transparently fair and above reproach. This is not a partisan issue. This must be a cause taken up by all Americans and elected leaders.
