Joyce Evelyn Smith, 96, of Barrington

Joyce Evelyn (Read) Smith, 96, of Barrington, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020. She was the wife of the late H. Leonard Smith.

Born in Riverside, a daughter of the late Henry J. and Leila (Smart) Read, she lived in Barrington for 67 years.

Joyce graduated from East Providence High School in 1941 as a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society.  She then worked in Providence as secretary to staff at the former Evening Bulletin, the Providence Journal Co., and the cotton-brokerage firm of Jones, Gardner & Beal, retiring in 1951 to become a full-time homemaker. A portion of her later years was spent volunteering at the Rhode Island Institute of Mental Health.

She leaves her daughter, Sherrill L. Brown, son-in-law, Leslie E. Brown, and grandson, Michael P. Brown, all of Hiram, Maine, along with several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Gary L. Smith and the sister of the late Ellsworth H. Read, Irving C. Read, Henry J. Read, Jr., and Thelma A. (Read) Gallant MacDonald.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral services.
