Veteran loved making wine with his family

Joseph Quintal, 98, of Bristol, passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Rhode Island Veterans' Home. He was the husband of the late Nicoletta (Castigliego) Quintal for 66 years.

Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Camara) Quintal.

Joseph worked for the Converse Rubber Outlet for 47 years before his retirement in 1983.

He was an avid New York Yankees and New England Patriots fan. Joe also enjoyed gardening, golfing, he was a champion bowler, and he especially loved making homemade wine with his father and brothers for many years. 

Joe was also selected to participate in the “Honor Flight” in October 2017 in Washington, DC and was always proud to talk of his military assignments and duties.

He is survived by his children, Joseph Quintal Jr. and his wife Sherry of The Villages, FL;  John Quintal and his wife Patty Travers of Warren; Nancy Flynn and her husband Robert of Swansea; Joann Robin and her husband Ben of Palm City, FL; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his sisters, Dorothy Greenwood of Warren and Carrie Guido of Bristol; and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by his brothers John, Anthony and Manuel Quintal and sister, Mary Doris.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 10 AM in the Rhode Island Veterans' Home Chapel, 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol. Burial will be private.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
