Janet Cornell Powers, of Barrington, RI died peacefully at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence after a long battle with breast cancer.

Janet was born in Providence, RI, in 1960. She was the fourth of six children born to William R Powers III and Sarah S. Powers. She grew up in Barrington, attending Nayatt School, Barrington Middle School and Barrington High School. Janet was an avid reader and was happiest combing the beaches of Rhode Island looking for treasures.

Janet worked for many years in the restaurant and hospitality industry and earned a reputation for her mentoring and high standards. She managed popular restaurants in Connecticut and Rhode Island but for the last decade of her life she lovingly cared for her mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She is survived by her children, Steven J. Silvia of Manchester, Conn., John M. Sweeney Jr. of Woonsocket, and Samuel R. P. Sweeney of Glastonbury, Conn., as well as her siblings, Sarah P. Frese, Donald W. Powers and Rebecca R. Powers. Her brothers Christopher J. Powers and William F. Powers predeceased her, as did her parents.

Her burial will be private. The family asks that donations in Janet’s name be made to Tap-in Inc. PO Box 252, Barrington, RI 02896 or at www.tapinri.org. Arrangements are by the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, Riverside. For online condolences please visit wrwatsonfuneralhome.com
