PORTSMOUTH — A husband who drove to the police station early Saturday morning to pick up his wife after she had been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) was arrested for the same offense, police said.
At about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, officers came across a disabled vehicle that was partly in the roadway in the area of Chase Road at Park Avenue, according to police.
The driver, Betsy Jane Medeiros, 58, of 13 Cedar Ave., Middletown, showed signs of intoxication and was charged with DUI, first offense, police said.
Later on, shortly before 2 a.m., her husband, Marc Christopher Brownell, 65, of the same address, drove to the police station to pick up his wife. Brownell also showed signs of impairment, and was charged with DUI, first offense. He was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.
They weren’t the only drivers to be charged with DUI recently. In fact, Portsmouth Police charged eight drivers with that offense in a seven-day span from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5. Another driver was arrested on a bench warrant for failing to appear on a previous DUI charge.
Monday, Dec. 30
Alycia Lynne Goncalo, 36, of 64 Pocasset Road, Tiverton, was charged with DUI, first offense, at about 9:05 p.m. Gonzalo was stopped on West Main Road at Melville School for speeding, failing to maintain her lane, and tailgating other vehicles, police said. She was also cited for refusing a chemical test.
Tuesday, Dec. 31
Paul K. Grossman, 66, of 20 Half Mile Road, Barrington, was charged with DUI, first offense, shortly after 8:30 p.m. Grossman was pulled over on West Main Road after he was observed committing multiple roadway violations and striking a curb, according to police. He was also cited for refusing a chemical test.
Wednesday, Jan. 1
Aleksander Keith Brown, 41, of 117 Dartmouth Woods Drive, North Dartmouth, was charged with DUI, first offense, after being stopped on West Main Road at West Passage Drive around 12:45 a.m. He was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.
Cynthia Marie Edwards, 58, of 710 Windwood Drive, Apt. 203, Tiverton, was charged with DUI, first offense, after being pulled over on Route 24 North on the Sakonnet River Bridge around 2:15 a.m. According to police, she was stopped because her vehicle hadn’t maintained its lane of travel. She was also cited for refusing a chemical test.
Friday, Jan. 3
Ender Isaac Orellana Coreas, 25, of 153 4th St., Apt. 3, Fall River, was arrested on a 2nd District Court bench warrant for failure to appear for a pre-trial on a previous DUI charge brought by the Tiverton Police Department. He was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped on East Main Road around 8:45 p.m.
Peter Alan Niemitz, 71, of 230 Briarwood Lane, was charged with DUI, first offense, after being pulled over in the area of East Main Road and Union Street at about 10:45 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 5
Darien Larnell Northup, 30, of 147 Woody Hill Road, Bradford, was charged with DUI, first offense, after being pulled over for speeding shortly after 8 p.m. at the Mobil XtraMart on West Main Road.
