Eagles top Islanders in Injury Fund scrimmage

Barrington kicks off against East Providence on Friday

Posted

The Barrington High School football team used last Friday night’s Injury Fund game against Middletown as a controlled scrimmage.

Barrington’s Braeden Flaherty took an option pitch from quarterback James Anderson and out-ran the Islanders’ secondary for the game’s only score. Will Hopkins kicked the extra point, giving the Eagles a 7-0 advantage.

Barrington’s offense showed sparks throughout, highlighted by a Bryan Ivatts’ run and a few nice throws by Anderson. Chris DeSisto and Nathan Cooperman each hauled in passes.

Both teams used the controlled scrimmage as an opportunity to evaluate almost all their players — second- and third-stringers took the field in the third and fourth quarters.

Friday's game was the first time either team had squared off against an opposing squad this season. Most years, high school teams in Rhode Island hold preseason scrimmages prior to Injury Fund games, but the schedule did not allow for that this year, said BHS Coach Sandy Gorham.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Barrington High School's Victory Field, but school officials moved the game to Gaudet School in Middletown because they were concerned about the condition of Victory Field. The Barrington field was reportedly still wet after the torrential downpours two nights earlier; Gaudet School field has an artificial turf surface.

Friday night game

Barrington will open its non-league schedule with a game against East Providence on Friday night, Sept. 10. The game will be played at East Providence High School at 6:30 p.m.
