Comfort dogs help Barrington school community following tragedy

Levi and other dogs assist staff and students at BMS

Comfort dogs from a number of police departments were at Barrington Middle School on Friday morning, Jan. 31, helping students and staff who were impacted by the loss of a former Barrington student.

The dogs, including Levi from the Barrington Police Department, were active throughout the building as the community processes the deaths of Barrington residents Spencer Lane and his mother Christine Lane. The Lanes were aboard a passenger jet that collided with an Army helicopter near Regan National Airport in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night, Jan. 29.

Spencer, 16, attended local schools through his freshman year at Barrington High School. A talented figure skater, Spencer was returning home from the National Development Camp, following the U.S. Championships in Kansas.

Barrington Middle School Principal Dr. Andy Anderson thanked the area police departments who assisted staff and students with the comfort dogs.

“Comfort dogs are specially trained to provide emotional support and offer a calming presence to anyone who may need it,” Dr. Anderson wrote in an email to the school community. “We are grateful that our partnership with the BPD (Barrington Police Department) allows us to welcome Officer Levi into our school community during times like this.”
