Clerk: Barrington ready for Nov. 3 election

Barrington will have six polling locations

Posted

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, Barrington Town Clerk Meredith DeSisto says the town is well prepared for the upcoming Nov. 3 election with safety measures in place and plenty of volunteer poll workers.

“We have heavily advertised in Barrington but have received 93 applications, [and] presently I believe the town of Barrington is doing well with poll workers and I am proud that so many people have applied,” Ms. DeSisto said via email.

The town is also taking steps to keep both voters and workers safe at the polls.

“All of us, the BOE (Board of Elections), SOS (Secretary of State) and the local BOC (Board of Canvassers), are doing our best to protect everyone at the polls and during early/emergency voting by supplying PPE equipment by having hand sanitizer, wipes, masks worn by the poll worker and the voter, face shields and gloves for the poll worker and, in some cases, sneeze guards,” said DeSisto.

Residents will have more choices than usual on how and where to vote.

“There are so many choices to vote this year,” she said.

Voters can apply for a mail ballot and mail it to the Board of Elections or drop it off at the mail ballot drop box at the Barrington Town Hall. The town will also have all of its polling locations open as well as an additional site. The polling locations will be: Barrington High School, Barrington Middle School, Nayatt School, Hampden Meadows School, and Sowams School.

The Board of Elections will also offer emergency voting for residents in the town hall, essentially allowing any resident who will not be able to make it to the polls on Election Day to cast a ballot early. Voting at the town hall runs from Oct. 14 through Nov. 2, during business hours. (The town hall is open on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.) Polls will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The voter registration deadline was Oct. 4.

Besides the race for U.S. president, the Nov. 3 ballot is highlighted by races for U.S. Senate, Congress, the Rhode Island General Assembly, Town Council, School Committee and several local and statewide questions.

In the 2016 presidential election, Barrington saw a 66.1 percent voter turnout of its 9,758 registered voters.
