The Barrington 11U All-Star baseball team lost 4-1 to Cranston East in a must-win game in the state tournament last week.
Barrington dropped its first tournament game 11-0 to the eventual champs, Smithfield. That loss put Barrington into a must-win game against Cranston East on Wednesday. The two teams were tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, when a Cranston East batter hit a three-run homer over the right-centerfield fence. That proved to be the difference in the game.
Barrington Manager Andrew Collins said Sean Caldarella pitched very well in the loss.
“It was a much strong effort and better energy in Game 2,” Collins said. “I was proud of the boys and the commitment they showed throughout the tournament.”
Barrington struggled from the start against Smithfield, allowing six runs in the first inning. The local team also had some defensive issues against the tough Smithfield lineup.
Collins said a bright spot in the game was the pitching of Ben Claussen, a 10-year-old who came up from minors and pitched two scoreless innings. He also struck out the side in the third inning.
