Barrington writing its own World Series book

The Barrington U12 All-Star baseball team will begin writing its final chapter of the 2019 season on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 15.

Barrington Coach Frank Fede said he and the other coaches never discussed a trip to Williamsport, Pa. for the Little League World Series. Instead the Barrington coaches emphasized playing one game at a time, focusing on each at-bat, each pitch, each play in the field.

"We never talked about Williamsport. We never did. We had four jobs — job one was districts," said Mr. Fede. "The first practice we had was chapter one, the first practice was the first page of the book. You can't talk about chapter two until you get through chapter one."

Mr. Fede said "chapter one" included the Barrington U12 All-Star team's run through the Rhode Island Little League District II tournament. He said Barrington, which opened with a tough loss to Bristol, battled hard against some very good District II teams.

"The teams we have in our district … we have a big rivalry with Bristol," Mr. Fede said. "In the last four years we have a 4-and-4 record with Bristol. Rumford was great this year. Pineview was great. Portsmouth was great. Tiverton. We have Riverside. The teams we play are hard, scrappy, tough teams."

Barrington captured the District II tournament title with back-to-back wins over Pineview and then turned the page to chapter two — the state tournament.

"Cranston Western, what can you say about them," added Mr. Fede.

Barrington was tested night after night during the state tournament, and celebrated some impressive wins, including a comeback victory over Cranston Western.

After putting the final touches on chapter two, Barrington moved on to the New England Regional tournament in Bristol, Conn. The local All-Stars, who defeated Vermont and Connecticut in earlier round games, knocked off New Hampshire 6-4 in the finals.

"Chapter three, we knew what was going to happen in chapter three. I mean, this is one of the most exhausting experiences of my life," Mr. Fede said.

Thursday marks the start of chapter four — Barrington will play against South East regional champs, South Riding, Va., at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
