Barrington High School Football Coach Sandy Gorham said his team’s offense was “OK” during the Injury Fund game against East Providence on Friday night, Sept. 6.
“We were a little erratic on offense,” Gorham said. “We’re still figuring it out. We had some good moments and we had some dumb penalties.”
Gorham said his team’s first drive was rough, but the Eagles’ offense settled down after that and moved the ball down the field. He said Charly Potter had a nice run and Kellan Johnson hauled in a pass that gave Barrington a first and goal at the EP four-yard-line.
Gorham also praised quarterback Blake Dolan’s run at the goal-line — Dolan faked to the dive back and darted into the end zone for Barrington’s only touchdown in the 9-7 loss to EP.
“That was a really good read by Blake,” Gorham said.
The BHS coach said Matt Zimmerman played well for the Eagles’ defense. The senior defensive lineman made a number of stops.
“He’s a tough kid. Big motor. He did a really nice job,” Gorham said.
The Eagles’ coach also praised the play of linebacker Henry McClelland. “He’s coming along nicely,” he said.
Ryan Wilmarth, a sophomore defensive lineman, was another bright spot for the Eagles’ defense.
“He’s done very, very well,” Gorham said. “He’s a big, strong kid. And he plays with a lot of aggressiveness. He did really, really well.”
Gorham said Wilmarth earned himself a spot in the defensive line rotation.
Barrington will open up the regular season with a rematch of last year’s Division II Super Bowl — the Eagles travel to Cumberland on Friday night, Sept. 13 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
“They’re going to be fired up,” Gorham said of Cumberland. “They’re going to consider it a revenge game for the Super Bowl.”
Barrington defeated Cumberland 28-21 in last year’s championship game. The Clippers will have a number of key returning players, including their quarterback and wide receiver.
“They have a good program,” Gorham said.
The BHS Coach said his team has worked hard in the preseason preparing for Cumberland in Week 1 — Barrington scrimmaged against LaSalle Academy and New Bedford Voc Tech before squaring off against East Providence in the Injury Fund game.
