The Barrington High School boys tennis team improved to 11-0 after a key victory over East Greenwich last week.
The match between the Eagles and Avengers was a showdown of the two undefeated Division I teams. Barrington prevailed 5-2, thanks, in part, to the Eagles’ number singles player Bryce Kupperman.
“Bryce was huge for us,” said Barrington High School Coach Story Salit, adding that Kupperman won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
“He’s battle tested,” Salit said.
The BHS coach said Kupperman regularly practices against Luke Sapolsky — the Eagles’ number one singles player and arguably the best high school tennis player in the state.
“And he has Gabe (Anderson) nipping at his heels at number three,” Salit said.
Kupperman and Anderson were doubles teammates and won two state doubles championships before moving into singles spots this season.
Salit said Kupperman and Anderson have battled in ladder matches during practice.
“They embrace the fact that they’re even,” Salit said.
Kupperman, Anderson and Sapolsky, along with number four singles player Justin Kuo, won their singles matches against East Greenwich.
Salit said Sapolsky has been playing very well this season.
“I would say Luke is the most reliable player in the state. He’s the most reliable player I’ve ever coached,” Salit said, adding that Sapolsky does not have any weaknesses and is mentally tough.
The Avengers won team points at number one doubles and number two doubles.
“I wasn’t pleased with how we played under pressure,” Salit said.
The coach added that other players — Kuo and the Eagles’ number three doubles team — came through with clutch performances. Kuo won his match in three sets, as did the Eagles’ third doubles team.
The BHS coach said the win over East Greenwich was nice, but “at the end of the day, it was just a regular season match.”
