Barrington throwers named 'Virtual All-Americans'

William Cauley and Maddy McGloin finish top-five in Virtual Nationals

Posted

Four Barrington residents recently competed in the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation/athleticNET Virtual Qualifying series and Virtual National Championships.

There were three virtual qualifying periods and the top 50 in each event qualified for the National Championship meet. An athlete could compete in one, two, or all three qualifying meets in an effort to qualify for the championship meet.

In the virtual national championship meet, recent Barrington High School graduate William Cauley placed fifth with in the 12-pound hammer throw with a distance of 216 feet, 3 inches. Fellow BHS graduate Maddy McGloin placed fifth in the 4-kilo hammer throw with a distance of 163 feet, 9 inches.

Both Cauley and McGloin were selected "Virtual All-Americans."

Barrington athletes MacKenzie Stephens placed 23rd at 132 feet, 7 inches, and Meaghan Coyne was 30th with a 115-foot, 11-inch throw.

The virtual competition was a unique experience for the athletes, who have been practicing on their own since the for months. In many cases, the athletes themselves figured out ways to record the throws; sometimes friends and family would help out.

All performances had to be a continuous video recorded from start to finish and include a visual view of the distance thrown.

The video was then submitted to athletic.net where it was moderated and officials determined if the performance was “valid” or “invalid."

All Barrington residents competed as "unattached."
