Minors Division team goes undefeated in District 2 tournament; headed to states

The Barrington Little League Minors Division All-Star softball team won the District 2 Championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating Newport 26-8.

The victory propels Barrington into the state tournament, which will be held July 19-24 in Warwick.

Barrington Manager Chris Promades praised his team following the win.

“The girls, they’ve been awesome since Day 1 when this All-Star season started,” Coach Promades said. “I’ve always asked them to give 100 percent with their effort and attitudes and they’ve been fantastic. They’ve demonstrated great sportsmanship. They’ve battled and grinded all the way since Day 1, through the whole district tournament and they’ve earned themselves a championship.

“And now, like I said a while ago, we’re putting Barrington softball back on the map. We’re going to go to the state tournament and represent Barrington and District 2 the best that we possibly can, and I couldn’t be any more proud of these girls.”

Barrington powered through the District 2 tournament without a loss, and without playing a single home game. The local team opened the tournament with a win at Portsmouth and then defeated Newport in the winner’s bracket final. Newport defeated Portsmouth in the elimination bracket final and earned a second shot at Barrington, but on Sunday the Barrington girls proved to be even tougher than they were during the first showdown.

Barrington held Newport off the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, and the exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the inning. Barrington batters went through the lineup twice, taking full advantage of walks and timely hitting.

Newport scored twice in the second inning, but Barrington responded with 13 more runs, highlighted by Erin Moran’s home run, and a triple by Ava Lucas.

Audrey Paxton handled the pitching duties for Barrington, striking out Newport batters in key situations.

Newport scored six runs in the top of the third inning, but umpires called the game after that point, with Barrington leading by 18 runs.

Members of the Barrington team were honored following the championship game and posed for photos with the District 2 banner. Coach Promades shared a short speech, praising his team.

In 2019, Coach Promades led the Barrington Majors Division All-Star baseball team to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. His son, Christopher, was a catcher on the team that won a district, state and regional championship.

Angie Promades, the coach's daughter, plays catcher and shortstop for the Barrington Minors Division All-Star softball team.

“As much as there are differences between the two, there are definitely some similarities,” Coach Promades said. “One thing I can say for both the boys and the girls, these kids sacrifice going to cookouts, beach parties. They put everything on the line. They sweat. They give us 100 percent all summer long. Really, that’s what it’s all about. Whether it’s for the boys or the girls, I see many comparisons just like that and I couldn’t be any more proud of these girls than I am today.

“This is awesome. What a way to spend my summer.”
