Boys and girls team defeat North Kingstown opponents in quarterfinals

Posted

It had been about a year since the members of the Barrington High School swim teams had actually competed against another team in-person.

On Saturday, the Eagles made the most of the opportunity, as the BHS boys and girls teams easily defeated their North Kingstown competition. The Barrington girls were the first to advance, defeating the Skippers 64-30 at the Bayside Family YMCA pool.

Once that playoff meet was over, the Barrington boys entered the pool against North Kingstown. The Eagles defeated the North Kingstown boys by the same margin, 64-30.

The Barrington girls team was scheduled to compete against LaSalle in the semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. at PODS.

The boys team defeated Cumberland in the semifinals and  will swim against the winner of Hendricken vs. Prout in the finals on Saturday, March 6 at PODS Aquatic Center. The girls final was set for Sunday.

The opportunity to swim against another team in-person was a welcomed change for the BHS swim teams, which held virtual meets throughout the regular season.

“The virtual meets were tough for the kids to get excited for because they were only swimming against themselves,” Coach Gorham wrote. “The opponents were swimming with us but because of pool availability they often did not swim on the same day. The officials would sign the meet sheet to verify the results and then the coaches would contact each other and score the meet. Crazy!! But the kids did appreciate the fact that they were in the water and competing.”

This year’s BHS swim teams were led by seniors who had experienced unprecedented success through their four years at BHS. The senior members of the girls team are Rachel Baker, Emma DiGiacomo, Liza Zhukov, Noelle Robinson, Meghan McCormott, and Anne Sweeney. The senior members of the boys team are Jackson Bennett, David McMillan, Chris Silveria, and Colby Snow.

Playoff brackets

League officials opted for the playoff brackets this season.

“Because of Covid restriction for indoor gathering, there is no traditional state meet where all the teams come together at Brown and compete,” Coach Gorham wrote. “The championship will be a dual meet format. It changes the complexion of the meet because some teams are better dual meet teams than a championship style meet.”
