The Barrington Middle School softball team, in just its second year, won the Rhode Island State Championship on Tuesday night, June 3.

Barrington defeated Western Hills Middle School, of Cranston, 10-9, in a thriller at Rhode Island College.

Barrington Middle School, which advanced to the finals with a semifinal win over Wickford, took the lead late in the championship game on a double by Erin Moran. (The eighth-grader also provided the walk-off hit in the 2-1 victory over Wickford.)

Barrington Middle School used three pitchers in the championship game — Audrey Paxton, Ava Lucas and Piper Morrissette.

Barrington finished the regular season with a 9-0 record. The Eagles defeated Broad Rock Middle School 16-4 in the first round of the playoffs and knocked off Westerly 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Barrington, the number one seed in the Eastern Division, defeated Wickford, the number one seed in the Southern Division, 2-1, in the semifinals.

Western Hills Middle School had only allowed one run through its playoff push before the Eagles scored 10 runs on nine hits in the finals.

Barrington Middle School is coached by Brian Goodhart. This was the second year BMS has had a middle school program.
