Eagles outpaced by Rams in Monday's meet

Posted

The Barrington High School boys cross country team is returning some strong runners this season, led by senior Holden Vaughan.

Vaughan is a four-year member of the team and finished eighth at last year’s cross country state championship. Barrington High School boys cross country coach Mike Katz said Vaughan has shown steady improvement over the years.

“He’s probably the second-fastest returning runner in the state this year,” Coach Katz said. “He’s fast… He’s quick and he’s been running well since he was a freshman. He’s a very strong worker and he’s very into the sport.”

Coach Katz mentioned three other seniors on the team: Andrew Rego (who was Barrington’s top finisher in Monday’s meet against LaSalle), Noah Buller and Caleb Schultz. Rego is the Eagles’ number three runner this year.

Sophomore Brandon Piedade is the Eagles’ number two runner. Coach Katz said Piedade is a strong runner who has battled some injuries in the past. Piedade ran very well for the Eagles at the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard Park over the weekend, said Coach Katz.

Other key contributors for the Eagles this season are sophomore Elliot Lefort and junior Finn Myatt. Coach Katz said he has also been impressed with freshmen Connor Curran and Myles Napolitano. Curran ran well on Saturday at the Ocean State Invitational and also at a race on Martha’s Vineyard earlier this season. Napolitano has also performed well, although he broke his wrist during the Martha’s Vineyard meet.

Coach Katz said Charlie Stockwell is coming back from an injury this season and appears to be rounding into shape.

“I think we have a legitimate shot at getting top six in the state,” Coach Katz said. “It’s going to be tough. The top four teams are very good. We need a little bit more depth. We need more speed between our fourth, fifth and sixth runners.”

Barrington is scheduled to travel to the Thetford (Vt.) Invitational this Saturday.
