Barrington girls show resolve in loss to LaSalle

The Barrington High School girls soccer team opened its season against perennial powerhouse LaSalle Academy on Saturday morning, losing 2-0.

It was a tough way to kick off the season but BHS coach Steven Pickford said he was happy with his team's effort.

"For our first game, I thought they did pretty well," he said. "I was pleased."

Barrington trailed 1-0 at the break, and then gave up an own-goal early in the second half.

"It was no one's fault. Just bad luck," said the coach. "I think a lot of teams would have folded, but they didn't. They played strong. They showed a lot of resolve."

Coach Pickford said the Eagles had a few good scoring opportunities against the Rams, but were unable to cash in.

"LaSalle has a really solid defense. They controlled the midfield," Coach Pickford added.

Coach Pickford said three members of his team are dealing with some injuries, which forced some players into different positions. He said he was pleased with the play of his back-line and that of his team's goalkeeper.

In fact, the Eagles boast two quality goalkeepers this season, said the coach. Barrington will feature Elaina Wood, a junior, and Helena DeFanti, a sophomore, in net.

"I have high expectations for my goalkeepers," Coach Pickford said, adding that both girls worked hard in the off-season to prepare for the Division I slate of games.

This season will offer an abbreviated schedule — teams will play six league games in re-worked divisions. Barrington plays in a division featuring all Division I teams; the Eagles will play Cumberland twice. Coach Pickford has also added three non-league games, although he may add more non-league games later this season.

Captains

Junior Sarah Yee and seniors Grace Muccino and Abigail Carlotto are this year's team captains. Coach Pickford said Grace and Abigail play center-back, while Sarah can play "pretty much anywhere."

Coach Pickford is also expecting contributions from Tess Gagliano, a senior. Tess is a standout girls lacrosse player who had played soccer when she was younger — she went out for the team last year and made varsity. She'll be back to strengthen this year's team also.

Coach Pickford said Marie Choi-Schattle will also play a key role for the Eagles this season. The sophomore was new to Barrington High School last year.

"She's a strong soccer player," Coach Pickford said, adding that many of the juniors on the team who were role players last season appear ready to step up into larger roles this fall.

"They're an eager group," he said.

Coach Pickford is also excited about the future of the program — there are 20 freshmen in the program, including three freshmen who made varsity.

"It's a deep class," the coach said.

One of the challenges facing all teams this season will be limits on bonding opportunities. Coach Pickford said normal group activities, such as team dinners, are off-limits this year because of state guidelines and restrictions.

"It's going to be tricky," Coach Pickford said.

Barrington is scheduled to play against Mt. Hope in Bristol on Friday. The Huskies tied Portsmouth 5-5 last week.
