Barrington football team will face tough test on Friday night

Eagles improve to 4-0 after defeating Rogers

The Barrington High School football team will battle Westerly on Friday night, with a home playoff game hanging in the balance.

The Eagles improved to 4-0 with a 24-0 victory over Rogers High School last Friday night, but will face their toughest test of the season this week when the Bulldogs visit.

Barrington High School head coach Sandy Gorham said Westerly has a consistently strong program, competes each year in the postseason and will bring a big, tough team into Barrington on Friday night. Westerly is 2-0 in Division II, with wins over Mt. Hope and Rogers. The Bulldogs' lone loss came against Division I powerhouse Portsmouth in a non-league game to open the season.

“Westerly is very tough,” said Coach Gorham. “They’re always tough. And they’re big.”

Coach Gorham said Westerly has a couple of 270-pound linemen that will look to blast open holes for running backs who weigh in at more than 200 pounds.

“They’re primarily a run-team. They’re big up front,” Coach Gorham said.

“For us, this is probably the biggest game of the season.”

The Eagles coach said Barrington has already earned a Division II playoff berth, but can secure a home playoff game with a win over Westerly.

Friday's game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Victory Field in Barrington.

Eagles blank Vikings

Playing in bad weather is nothing new for the Barrington High School football team, and last Friday was some of the worst weather yet.

Coach Gorham said the game against Rogers was marred by rain, snow and wind.

“The wind was being funneled right through Toppa Field,” Coach Gorham said, referring to Rogers’s home field. “I thought this (weather) was the worst… It was miserable.”

The wet weather played a role in the game from the beginning, as a Rogers’ punt from its own end zone was repelled by a strong gust and netted just nine yards. Barrington wasted little time, punching it into the end zone a short time later.

The Eagles leaned on their running attack to score three touchdowns: Luke Gorham on an 8-yard TD run and a 4-yard TD run; and Bryan Ivatts on a 55-yard TD run. Quarterback Brigham Dunphy also connected with Mark Bernardo on a 23-yard pass and catch scoring combination. (Barrington did not convert any extra point attempts.)
