The Rhode Island Food Policy Council announced its upcoming legislative priorities during a recent meeting with local lawmakers that was held at Barrington Farm School.
The Council is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the state’s food systems. During the visit to the Barrington Farm School, officials from the Council stated that priorities for 2025 will focus on supporting and encouraging more local farming and also reducing the amount of food waste that ends up in the state’s landfill each year. According to news reports, the Council is also working to revise the tax credits for urban and small farmers, provide free lunch and breakfast to all students, increase its support for purchasing local food, and establish a tax credit for food donations.
Dozens of people, including numerous local legislators, attended the event. People learned about the history of Barrington Farm School and received a detailed tour of its robust composting program.
