The Barrington High School boys swim team won the state championship on Saturday morning, March 5, at Brown University.
The Eagles knocked off Bishop Hendricken, which had dominated the state swimming championship for years. Prior to this year's championship, Hendricken had only lost one state meet in the last 32 years.
Barrington captured this year's title with a total team effort. The Eagles scored 402 points, while Hendricken finished with 365. Wheeler was third with 139 points.
In addition, Barrington set two new state records.
BHS junior Will McClelland won the 50-yard freestyle with a record time of 20.97 seconds, topping the prior mark of 21.17 seconds set by C.J Sheldon in 2020. Will McClelland also helped set a new state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The BHS team of Will McClelland, his brother Alex McClelland, Max LaRoche and Lucas Jauregui finished with a time of 1:27.75, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:28.46 set by a previous Barrington team in 2018.
