Barrington boys organize neighborhood food drive

Local children collect dozens of bags of groceries

Posted

A group of children from Barrington recently collected 66 bags of food that they later donated to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Caleb Clark, Kyle Isidoro, Zac Poissel and Hudson DeRienzo distributed flyers and empty grocery bags around their Hampden Meadows neighborhood on a recent Saturday, and returned the following Saturday to pick up the donations. The boys also dropped off thank-you notes to everyone who participated.

The boys' neighbors had donated plenty of canned food, pasta, cereal and more that the youngsters then gave to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in Providence. Among the agencies that rely upon the food bank is Barrington's Tap-In (Touch A Person In Need), which services people in need from East Providence, Bristol, Warren and Barrington. Food pantries across the region experience a higher-than-normal level of need through the holiday season.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank offers information to children who are interested in conducting their own neighborhood food drives — the program is called "One Kid Can!"
