The Barrington High School boys lacrosse team has opened the season with a 3-2 record in Division I.

The Eagles have wins over East Greenwich, North Kingstown and Middletown this season, and losses to LaSalle and Moses Brown. 

Barrington Coach Michael Curry said the private school teams in Division I offer some of the toughest competition around. 

“It’s a challenge, for sure,” Curry said. “Last year we had T-shirts made up with the Barrington zip code on them. We go and play LaSalle and they’ve got kids from all over Rhode Island. They have kids from Massachusetts.

“We’ve kind of positioned ourselves as trying to be the best public school in the state.”

Curry said this year’s team is led by a strong senior class, including senior captains Josh Bairos (defenseman), Neil MacGillivray (midfield) and Charlie Rayden (midfield). 

“They’re doing a terrific job,” Curry said. “They bring a seriousness to it.”

The senior class includes a number of talented players: Charlie Durkin (face-off, midfield), Hunter Maher (defensman) and his brother Andrew Maher (attack), Will Giordano (defenseman), Ben Ptaszek (defenseman), Nate Robinson (defenseman), Tommy Feroce (midfield), Dylan Meeker (attack) and Jacob Mullaly (midfield).

Curry said the Eagles also have a number of solid juniors. Tucker Squires is a midfielder and Ryan Valentine starts in net. 

“He’s a big kid, very talented,” Curry said. 

Marshall Moore, Alex Muller and Nolan Gaus are defensemen, while Robbie Pippitt plays midfield and Jackson Horn is attack. 

“We’re going to fill in nicely from the junior class,” Curry said. “We’re so evenly spread.”

Quinn McNamara and Jake Ignall, both midfielders, headline the sophomore class for the Eagles. Curry said McNamara is a natural scorer.

“He’s been doing an outstanding job for us,” Curry said.

Barrington also has four freshmen contributing for the varsity lacrosse team: Chase Squires, Colin Hope, Nick Spaight and Ben Parylak. 

“We’ve got a very good, mature defense, led by seniors. And a very talented goalie. So on the back end of our team, we’re pretty solid and we’re very smart,” Curry said. “The attack moves a very quickly, and has good vision. And then we have talented face-offs with Charlie and Chase. At the midfield, they’re all very, very good athletes.”

“They’re a very hard-working group… They want to win and especially the seniors, they want to leave their mark. They want to compete. And they all want to represent the program and the school.”

Barrington’s assistant coaches this season are Joe Hope and Bill Horn. Curry said both coaches bring a wealth of experience to the team. 

“From my perspective, every year we have success, is making the program at Barrington High School stronger,” Curry said. “That’s a never-ending process.”

Curry said Barrington has a key game against Portsmouth today (Friday, May 6) at 7 p.m.
