Monday night marked the end of the road for the Barrington High School boys and girls basketball teams this season.
Both teams lost quarterfinal matchups in their respective State Tournaments on Monday night — the girls team lost to Portsmouth, 49-39, while the boys fell to Central, 76-61.
In the girls game, Barrington fell behind early but battled hard throughout, cutting Portsmouth’s lead to five points at the end of third quarter. The Patriots went on a 7-to-2 run to start the fourth and pulled away down the stretch.
“We made too many mental mistakes tonight,” said Barrington High School girls basketball coach Stephen Lenz. “Too many little mistakes and a couple of misses on the other end and that swings the game, right.”
Despite the loss, Coach Lenz was proud of his team.
“What a season for them. Are you kidding me? They lost 47 of their 54 points (from last year’s team), went 16-2, made it to the Final Four of the D-I. This is one of my favorite teams I’ve ever coached,” he said. “To be able to come out and do that this season when everybody thought we were going to stink. I can’t tell you how many times I heard that.
“They just played hard. They played hard the whole season. I don’t have one negative thing to say about them. They’re great. It was a great season.”
Maggie Ornstedt led Barrington scorers with 10 points — the sophomore scored Barrington’s first four points of the game. Faith Van Ness and Riley Graveline scored nine points each, and Olivia Morrissette finished with six points. Freshman guard Ella Johnson opened the second half scoring with a deep three-pointer and finished the game with five.
Boys game
The Barrington High School boys basketball team traded baskets with Central at the start of the second half as the two teams battled for the lead. But it was the Knights who pulled away by the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles trailed by 13 at the start of the fourth. They trimmed it to seven with about five minutes remaining, but the Knights proved too much down the stretch.
Caleb Satisfield provided a handful of highlight reel plays for the Eagles and finished with a team-high 24 points. Ryan Rigamonti added 20 points for Barrington.
