Local 12U Majors team rallies from five runs down in final inning; Barrington headed to regionals

The Barrington 12U Majors All-Star team mounted an impressive comeback in the state championship game on Wednesday night, July 24, scoring eight runs in the final inning to capture a 10-7 victory over Cranston Western.

The win gave Barrington its first state title in more than 40 years. The local team now advances to the New England Regional Tournament, where it will represent Rhode Island and battle for a chance to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

"This is just surreal," said Barrington Manager Chris Promades, following Wednesday's win over Cranston Western. "It's a great day for Barrington baseball."

Barrington, which was undefeated entering Wednesday night's game, fell behind against Cranston Western and trailed 7-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning. Barrington, which was the visiting team, built an impressive rally, capitalizing on every opportunity to score runs and cut into the Cranston Western lead.

"It was walks, hits, everything," said Mr. Promades. "We took the lead on a passed ball."

Leading 8-7, Barrington's Bumpy Promades hit a single, scoring two runs and upping the lead to 10-7.

"It was just storybook," said Mr. Promades. "We've had our backs against the wall the whole time. The kids just grinded it out… Everybody contributed. From top to bottom."

Owen Pfeffer pitched five and two-thirds innings for Barrington and Mason Crain took the mound for the final out of the game.

Mr. Promades said he was extremely proud of his team, adding that the group was excited to represent Barrington and all of Rhode Island in the regional tournament in Bristol, Conn. in August. The first game of the regional tournament will be on Aug. 5. Regional games will be televised by ESPN

In Barrington Little League's 68-year history, only one other local 12U team has won a state title — that was accomplished in 1975.
