The Barrington Minors Division All-Star softball team took an early lead against Warwick North in an elimination bracket game at the state tournament on Wednesday, July 20, but struggled to hold onto the lead, and lost 18-8.

The loss marked the end of the road for Barrington, which opened the tournament with a 15-0 loss to Cranston Western.

Facing a must-win situation, Barrington exploded for four runs in the top of the first inning against Warwick North. Angie Promades led off with an infield single, stole second and later scored Barrington’s first run. Lucy LoVerme, Ava Lucas and Kiera Martin also scored in the first inning.

Warwick North battled back in the bottom of the first inning to cut the lead to 4-3, but Barrington responded with three more runs. Warwick North capitalized on walks and some timely hitting to regain the lead 7-6 later in the game and then opened up its advantage. Warwick’s five-run fifth inning spelled the end for Barrington.

In their tournament opener, Barrington gave up eight runs in the first inning against Cranston Western. And while Barrington was able to get numerous runners on base, the local all-star team was unable to plate any of the runners. Cranston eventually won the tournament, knocking off Warwick 15-0 in the finals. Cranston will compete in the regional tournament.

“I am so proud of how well the Barrington Eagles 10U Softball All-Stars played this season,” said Barrington Manager Chris Promades. “All of the credit goes to the players and how hard they worked throughout the All-Star season en route to winning the 10U District 2 Softball Championship for the second consecutive year.”
