Underwater drone explodes on Route 24 onramp

Posted

Despite rumors to the contrary flying around, a government drone did not crash and explode on Route 24 around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“It was an underwater salvage drone,” police said.

The large commercial drone, owned by an unnamed private salvage company with facilities in Bristol and Tiverton, was being transported on a trailer when it apparently suffered a lithium battery issue, burst into flames and exploded as the driver turned onto Route 24 south. The driver pulled over on the onramp.

First responders were called to the scene and fire department members extinguished the fire, but fire department members said just after 4:30 p.m. that the onramp would be closed for an indeterminate amount of time.
