Land conservation trust hosts Toe Jam Puppet Band for season's finale

Vinny Lovegrove and Tom Poitras sang about potato chips, dirty laundry and what it’s like to do the car seat shuffle. They blew enormous bubbles, led a sing-along and opined on chores. Out on the lawn at Westport Woods Friday afternoon, dozens of kids ate up every bit of it.

The Marion-based duo, who for 25 years have performed together as the Toe Jam Puppet Band, closed out the Westport Land Conservation Trust’s summer-long “Nature’s Stage” free concert series, which was funded by the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust and administered by the Westport Community Gift Fund and Bank of America.

The concerts started in June and were geared for kids — “the idea was to encourage families to explore the outdoors in a different way and to foster that love of the land,” the trust’s outreach and communications coordinator, Charlotte Greeson, said. Even though kids were the main focus, the parents in the 100-strong crowd laughed right along with them.
