Victim dies Friday of self-inflicted gunshot wound at Sakonnet River Outfitters

Posted

For the second time in less than two months, a patron died Friday afternoon of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Sakonnet River Outfitters.

Police were called to the 777 Main Road firearms store and indoor firing range at 3:43 p.m. The identity of the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has not yet been released pending notification to next of kin.

Representatives from Sakonnet River Outfitters declined to comment, but closed the store following the incident and stayed closed Saturday. It reopened on Sunday, and a note on the business's Facebook page apologized for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure.

The incident is still under investigation, and Tiverton police are being assisted by the Rhode Island Office of the State Medical Examiner. It is unknown whether the fatality was accidental or, as was the case earlier this year, suicide.

Pat and Jay Runci in 2021 purchased the area's only firearms retailer in the area in 2021. After the previous incident, in which a man rented a gun and shot himself on the shooting range, Jay Runci told the Sakonnet Times that safety is the store's biggest priority, and that he would have never rented out a firearm to the victim had he or any employee been aware of any emotional distress.
