WESTPORT — The Westport High School soccer team lost to Diman, 1-0, during the team’s first home game on Friday afternoon. Diman mid-fielder Dominic Rocha scored the only goal of the game at the 52:15 mark in the second half. The ball popped out of a scrum in the box right to Rocha, who was charging towards the net. As he ran in, he blasted the ball into the left corner of the net by the diving Westport sophomore goalkeeper, Conor Lecomte.

Westport’s two keepers Lecomte and freshman Tyler Holden combined for 13 saves. Most of them came in the second half when Diman had the wind.

Westport had a golden opportunity to tie the game when freshman Nicholas Payne corralled a pass and dribbled by a Diman defender right in front of the goal. With the defender draped on him and the goalkeeper charging, Payne shot the ball just wide of the goal post.

“Our team has had trouble finishing,” said Westport head coach Chris Parker. “We have a young team and are learning a new system,” he said.

Coach Parker said that the team had played very well defensively, but is still adjusting offensively. “We’ll get it,” he said.

“I can’t say enough about my captains and seniors. They have shown a lot of leadership this year,” said Coach Parker.

The captains are Ethan Carreiro, Corey Lesieur and Mitchell Pichette and seniors, Griffin Lecomte, Andrew Clayton and Ian Pichette.

“We have a good group. We’ll get there,” said the coach.
