Westport baseball team struggles during latest stretch of games

After starting the season strong, going 2-1 over their first three games, the Westport baseball team has struggled as of late with a 1-2 record during that stretch, for a 3-3 record overall and a 2-1 record in the MAC Comprehensive Division.

“Up until today we’ve played some good baseball,” said Head Coach Jason Pacheco. “We’ve had some close games.

Westport 6 West Bridgewater 5

Senior pitcher Griffin Lecomte pitched an eight inning marathon as the Wildcats beat West Bridgewater 6-5 in extra innings in an away league game on Saturday April 14.

“It was a great come from behind win,” said coach Pacheco.

Westport leadoff hitter Nick Collins led off the sixth inning with a single with the Wildcats down 5-3. Griffin Lecomte reached on an error. With his speedsters on base and power hitter Kyle Avila at the plate, coach Pacheco called for a double steal. It payed off.

Avilla smashed a single scoring both Collins and Lecomte to tie the score at 5-5. The two teams remained scoreless till the top of the eighth. Three hitter, Ethan Carreiro walked and stole second. Setting the table for sophomore Connor Lecomte. The infielder lined a hit to score Carreiro, giving the Wildcats a 6-5 lead.

Griffin Lecomte came out and got his own save in the bottom of the eighth sitting down West Bridgewater in order for the win.

Westport 4 Diman 5

Westport lost a nail biter at Diman, 5-4, on Wednesday, April 18. Kyle Avilla pitched five innings for the Wildcats, giving up three runs (one earned) and left the game with the score tied 3-3.

“Kyle struggled with his control and had a high pitch count,” said coach Pacheco on taking his big righty out of the game.

Griffin Lecomte pitched the sixth inning and gave up a run for 4-3 Diman lead.

Griffin Lecomte hit a single and stole second in the top of the seventh. Ethan Carreiro then ripped an RBI single scoring Lecomte to tie the game 4-4.

Nick Collins gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh as Diman won the game on an error.

Case 19 Westport 4

Case High School beat the Wildcats 19-4 in a non league home game on Monday, April 23.

“We got off to a terrible start,” said coach Pacheco.

Sophomore Connor Lecomte started the game and was pulled by coach Pacheco after two innings.

“Connor struggled to locate and left a lot of balls up in the zone,” coach Pacheco said. “Case made him pay for it. We talk a lot about keeping the ball down. And it was a struggle today.”

“We played poorly defensively early in the game. When we had chances to make plays and get out of innings, we did not make the plays,” he said.

On the brighter side, leadoff hitter Nick Collins and Griffin Lecomte both went 3-4. Both players scored for the Wildcats in the loss.

Eighth grade catcher Matt Bolger went 2-3 with an RBI single. Eighth grade pitcher Kenny Ferrer pitched the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings in relief, yielding just two runs.

“The last two games the team has been struggling defensively,” said coach Pacheco. “Our pitching hasn’t been bad, but our defense has hurt us the last couple of games.”

“We got to keep working at it. Keep getting more experience and keep working hard. It will come along,” said the coach.
