Westport’s Team Lambert completes stellar Seekonk season

Posted

Another Seekonk Speedway racing season has produced still more trophies atop what is already an impressive collection for Westport’s Lambert Brothers and Sons Racing Team.

As the name suggests, this is a team effort in every way imaginable.

Three Lambert sons race the two mostly stock Cutlasses and a stock Monte Carlo on Friday nights at the speedway.

Shayne, the youngest, started racing this year at age 15, like his brothers before him. He races in the pure stock division where he enjoyed a banner rookie season. He attends school at Bristol County Agricultural.

Jeremy, a Westport High School grad, won one race and posted all top five finishes this year.

And Colby, another WHS grad, posted five wins this season, four of them consecutive. His 2017 accomplishments include the triple crown championship and the title of track champion for the year.

They were introduced to the sport by their father, Russell Lambert, an accomplished race driver who has moved from behind the wheel to serve as coach for this next generation of Lambert racers.

“Their dad gave up racing so we could focus on keeping the boys’ three cars going,” which is quite an expense and effort in itself, said the boys’ mother, Sheila Lambert.

Son Russell Jr. serves on the talented pit crew with his fiance Mary Elizabeth Francis and others in support of his brothers.

Much credit goes to that pit crew and crew chief Randy Laplante, say all involved.

“We have a very dedicated pit crew — without them none of this would be possible,” Ms. Lambert said.

“The sport is like a full time job — there’s always something to do,” said Shayne. But it “all becomes totally different when you are strapped in and ready to race.” He hopes the experience leads him to his dream of racing in pro series —where there is actually money to be made.

“It’s not the faster car” that necessarily wins, said Colby, “it’s the man who refuses to lose.”

Jeremy said racing has moved beyond a sport for him — “It’s my passion.” He said he hopes his local success leads to a NASCAR opportunity someday.

One family member, daughter Brianna, races too, but has set out in a different direction. Riding horses since the age of 3, she now competes in the sport of barrel racing.

Among those cheering them all on are their Westport grandparents — Richard and Barbara Lambert and Edward Pereira.
