PROVIDENCE — A fuel tank tractor trailer roll-over accident the previous evening impacted the morning commute throughout East Providence and the East Bay on Thursday, Oct. 4.

According to a report by the State Police, the incident took place at about 7 p.m. on October 3. Then, a tanker truck driven by a Cumberland man for a Wrentham, Mass., company turned on its side attempting to enter Interstate 95 due north near Allens Avenue in Providence. The operator lost control of the vehicle, spilling over 11,000 gallons of gasoline. Local officials said most of the gas ran down the ramp onto the street then into the nearby Providence River.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported. The accident remained under investigation by state and local authorities.

East Providence Fire Department Chief Oscar Elmasian reported several department personnel and apparatus assisted at the scene. Two EPFD engines, a ladder truck, its foam trailer and HazMat crew were dispatched to aid the effort, he said.

As of the Thursday morning rush hour, traffic was slowed extensively in city at the East Shore Expressway as far back as the Wamponoag Trail as drivers attempted to enter onto Interstate 195. Allens Avenue was closed to motorists as was the I-95 on-ramp there, causing delays for drivers heading in both directions on I-95.
