Ellen Janice McHugh, age 69, of Westport, Mass., passed away Saturday, April 7, at home with her loving family by her side.

Ellen was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Oct. 30, 1948, daughter of Edward and Mary Janice Shaffer (Linnan).  Ellen worked and retired from AT&T. Upon retirement, she became a successful and well respected Realtor to the Westport area.

On June 23, 2012, she married Philip McHugh at their home in Westport, to which many friends and family came together to celebrate.

Ellen enjoyed traveling the world with her husband Phil. She was an avid gardner and took delight in the fruits of her labor on many garden walks with family and friends. She loved her time at the beach. Ellen's happiest moments were spent having fun and entertaining her family and many friends. She truly loved life.

Ellen is survived by her children, son Michael Sullivan of Westport, daughter Laura (Andrew) Kegler of Ripon, WI; grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Brennan, Laramie, Kaylyn and Cameron; siblings, Lynn (Fred) Troy of Elmira, N.Y., Mary Askeland of Dartmouth, Gretchen (Jerry) Arcouette of Westport, Patricia (Michael) Rodrigues of Westport, Edward (Linda) Shaffer of Castle Butte, Colo., and Peter Shaffer of Dartmouth.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Phil McHugh, parents Edward and Mary Shaffer, and brother-in-law Michael Askeland. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, along with a lifetime of friends.

Funeral service to which family and friends are invited will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport, on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. A private interment will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ellen McHugh’s honor to the Paralyzed Veterans of America or Steward Hospice of Fall River.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport, MA 02790.
