Charlotte Goddu Babbitt, 89, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2018. She was born on October 6, 1929, at her grandparent's home in Winchester, Mass. Charlotte was the third child of Lloyd Whitman and Louise Alexander Goddu of Sturbridge, Mass. The family summered at their cabin on Wilson Pond near Greenville, Maine.

Charlotte graduated Northfield School for Girls where she became an accomplished soprano and pianist. She went on to graduate from Endicott Jr. College. During that time, she met the love of her life, John Isaac Babbitt (Ike), of Westport, and the two were married at the Old Sturbridge Village Church in 1950. They settled in Westport where they raised their four children. Family time always included boating and skiing. Their home was filled with love, music, friends and family, beautiful floral arrangements from Charlotte's gardens, and their beloved dogs.

She embraced her community. Charlotte sang in the choir and was an active member of the Westport Point Methodist Church for over 30 years. She volunteered her time to various committees and boards over the years including the Westport Library, Westport Historical Society, the American Cancer Society and the Children’s Museum of Dartmouth. She was a member of The Garden Club of Buzzards Bay and a docent for school children at The Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum. In her later years, Charlotte served on the scholarship committee at UMass Dartmouth.

Charlotte was widowed in 1983. In the years that followed she enjoyed travel abroad with her sister, Nancy and brother-in-law, John. She found a treasured companion in Dr. Walter M. Platt in 1990. They spent summers in Westport and Padanaram and winters on Skidaway Island, Ga.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, John I. Babbitt; her parents and brother, L. Whitman Goddu. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Trull (John) of Brooklyn, Conn.; her children, Holly Cobb of Roswell, Ga., John I. Babbitt, Jr. (Karen) of S. Dartmouth, Kimberley Brier (James) of Carmel Valley, Calif., and Heather Gras (Peter) of S. Burlington, Vt; seven grandchildren, Whitney Gorman (Christopher), Blair Eatroff (Adam), Mitchell Brier (Elizabeth), Emily Babbitt, John I. Babbitt III (Sarah), Peter Gras, Jr. (Megan) and Hillary Gras; as well as three great grandchildren, Charlotte Gorman, Lucas Eatroff and Mitchell Brier, Jr.

A service in Charlotte’s memory will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Babbitt Family Scholarship Fund at UMass Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA 02747.
