The Buzzards Bay Coalition’s 24th annual Buzzards Bay Swim, scheduled for this morning, Saturday, June 24, has been cancelled due to unsafe weather conditions. The Coalition and safety personnel from the Massachusetts Environmental Police and the New Bedford and Fairhaven police, fire and harbormaster departments surveyed the outer New Bedford Harbor course this morning and deemed the weather forecast unsafe for swimmers.
“We know how disappointing it is to cancel this event, especially after hundreds of swimmers have worked so hard to train and fundraise – but the safety of swimmers and kayakers comes first,” said Coalition President Mark Rasmussen. “With the threat of thunderstorms and lightning, it’s best to keep everybody out of the water.”
The swim’s finish line celebration will continue to take place at Fort Phoenix Beach State Reservation (Green Street, Fairhaven) from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. All event participants, families and community members are invited to enjoy a pancake breakfast, coffee and an awards ceremony to recognize top fundraisers and longtime swimmers.
The Coalition will distribute a press release with additional information about the Swim, awards and fundraising results by noon today. Visit www.savebuzzardsbay.org/swim for more informatio
