Apparent Hells Angels sign interests Westport police

Westport Police say they think they know the meaning of a large, cryptic sign by farmland in the vicinity of 528 American Legion Highway.

The red and white sign proclaims “81 Strong” and has been in clear view of passersby on American Legion Highway.

Detective Jeff Majewski said last week that the sign appears to be a reference to the Hells Angels motorcycle club. The red and white colors, he said, and that number are both linked to the outlaw club — the 8th letter of the alphabet is H, the 1st letter is A, producing HA — Hells Angels.

An internet search seems to confirm that conclusion. “Common nicknames for the club are the H.A., Red & White, HAMC and 81,” according to Wikipedia.

The field just yards west of there is farmed by Between the Rows LLC, which leases the land from Timothy L. Barreira Sr., Det. Majewski said. Between the Rows LLC is listed as having several managing partners including Averyl Andrade, her husband Nathan Andrade, Jill Harris (Mr. Barreira’s long-time girlfriend) and others, he said.

Ms. Andrade has made news recently for her campaign seeking to convince town boards to allow farmers to grow marijuana for sale to stores in other Massachusetts towns — and for a police raid on the Between the Rows property as a result of advertised parties on a back lot there where vendors allegedly sold marijuana.

During an interview there a month ago, Ms. Amaral was asked by Shorelines about the meaning of that sign.

She said that she did not know, adding that she and her husband had nothing to do with it and do not know who put it up.

Det. Majewski said such signs are sometimes territorial markers, adding that there was once a bar across the street believed to be frequented by Hells Angels members.
