It may be known mostly for pumpkins, but the new buzz at Frerichs Farm is all about bees, goats and more.
The family farm and greenhouse on Kinnicutt Avenue has started a beekeeping program and it kicks off this Saturday, April 14, with a free presentation led by Jennifer Bristol, the farm’s newly minted beekeeper and a local 4-H leader.
Ms. Bristol will run Saturday’s free program with help from Ed Karle, one of the most respected and experienced beekeepers in the Rhode Island Beekeepers’ Association. The pair will offer an overview of what it takes to be a beekeeper, from education to equipment, and will present an informative and amusing dialogue on what can go right and go wrong in those early years. This is a free session and all ages are welcome. It runs from 11 a.m. to noon.
The farm’s new offerings don’t stop at bees. Ms. Bristol will also oversee a new goat program at the farm, teaching residents what it takes to raise the farm animals successfully.
Ms. Bristol said she’s excited to join the team at Frerichs Farm, in large part because the family business is the perfect place in which to keep bees.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of public programming at Frerichs Farm,” she said. “The farm offers a healthy hospitable habitat for beekeeping and is a perfect location to teach about goats, pollinator habitat and farming at any scale.”
Frerichs Farm, located at 43 Kinnicutt Ave., is owned and operated by Barbara and Dave Frerichs and is well-known as the host for the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Grower’s Weigh-off, held each October.
