Mt. Hope girls soccer loses to Coventry in D-I quarterfinals

The Lady Huskies lost to Coventry, 3-2, at Vendituoli Field on Saturday night. The Oakers Jordan Dwyer beat Huskies goalkeeper Thea Brum (12 saves) on a controversial goal to break a 2-2 tie in the second half.

“The winning goal by Coventry was a questionable offsides no-call by the officials. In a Quarterfinal match that non call cost us the game,” said Huskies head coach Kerri Ferreira.

Anna Kalooski and Lily Kalooski scored for the Oakers in the first half to give Coventry a 2-0 lead early in the first half. The Oakers seemed to have Mt. Hope reeling.

“I think they were quicker than us and beating us to the ball,” said coach Ferreira.

Olivia Medeiros got the Huskies on the board midway through the half. Forward Kaelen McKenna took the ball down the left side and with Oaker defenders trailing, she blasted a shot at Oakers goal keeper Liz Keeney. Keeney made the initial save, but the ball came loose and Medeiros booted it into the net to cut the lead to 2-1.

Minutes later the Huskies booted a ball into the air towards Medeiros just outside the box. Medeiros redirected the pass up to to forward Tess McKenzie in the box. McKenzie turned toward the goal, beat a Coventry defender and blasted the ball by Keeney, to knot the score at 2-2.

“It was nice to see my girls fight back and even the score at 2-2 before the half. I knew this match-up was going to be a battle to the end,” said the coach.

The Lady Huskies end the 2017 season with an 11-5-1 record in Division I.

“This team had another amazing season, finishing in the top four during the regular season and making it to the Quarterfinals,” said coach Ferreira, “This senior class has made it to the playoffs all four years. They made it to the semis, three times and quarterfinals, once. We are truly going to miss them and wish them all the best in the future.”

Coach Ferreira feels that the future looks bright for the returning team, “We have an exceptional core returning and are looking to be a top competitor next season. We hope to make another run at a State Championship for the the sixth straight year in a row,” she said.
